Powerful simulation sends message to students

This time of year students and their families are busy celebrating prom and upcoming high school or college graduations. Unfortunately, with these joyous occasions we are also reminded each year of the dangers that so often go hand in hand with these rights of passage -- that drinking and driving kills. Each year countless news reports cover the tragic and untimely death of a young person with the promise of a bright future whose life was cut short because of an alcohol related accident.

For the fifth consecutive year, seniors at one Pennsylvania high school were given a realistic example of the dangers of drinking and driving. Pennsylvania State Police, local fire rescue workers and several students worked together to stage a mock traffic accident meant to demonstrate the damage that can result when a driver gets behind the wheel while impaired. The event's student organizers planned the event for several months.

The suspect has been charged with vehicular homicide while driving under the influence of alcohol, in addition to other related charges. The suspect and the other surviving occupant of the vehicle were injured in the wreck.

Police say the traffic accident at the center of the case occurred shortly after 12:00 am on Route 422 in a town located about 50 miles from Lancaster. There were no witnesses to the accident, but investigators determined that the suspect's vehicle was traveling at a speed of at least 79 miles per hour at the time of the accident.

Philly-area journalist dies in freak traffic accident

What many are dubbing a freak traffic accident recently claimed the life of a woman that many residents in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas may have known. The 31-year-old woman was a local journalist serving as a web editor for Montgomery Media and a freelance writer for the Lebanon Daily News.

The woman was driving her Volkswagen on Pennsylvania Turnpike in East Cocalico Township with a truck travelling near her vehicle. As the truck passed a traffic control construction sign, it struck the sign, sending it hurling up in the air. When it came down, it smashed through the woman's windshield and struck her in the head.

Bronx Zoo car accident leaves 7 dead

Recent news shocked the nation as we learned of the four adults and three children who tragically died following the motor vehicle accident that occurred at the Bronx Zoo.

Police say the traffic accident occurred when the van's driver lost control, causing the vehicle to strike a median and cross the road's southbound lanes. The van then flipped over the guardrail and fell more than 50 feet to the ground, landing upside down. All of the van's seven occupants were killed in the accident. It is a reminder for drivers in the Lancaster area, to slow down when driving on the highways.

Owner charged after dog attacks 7-year-old neighbor

When a dog attacks someone, it is appropriate to hold the owner accountable. Responsible owners know their dog's temperament and most dog bites are preventable. In an attack earlier this month in Lancaster County, we can trace several missteps.

A 7-year-old boy was playing with another child on his front porch in Penn Township when a neighbor's pit-bull type dog somehow got out of the house and attacked the boy. Neighbors heard the screaming and immediately called 911. Witnesses say the dog bit the boy repeatedly and would not let go. The boy was first taken to Lancaster General Hospital then transported to Hershey Medical Center where he will have to undergo several surgeries. The boy sustained several bites to his arm, shoulder and ear.

Apparently the boy was not a stranger to the dog, as the boy had visited with the dog's family several times inside their house. It's unclear why the dog reacted the way it did, but it frightened the witnesses who say they still have nightmares of the haunting images.

Pennsbury accident victim to seek full damages

A Pennsylvania woman who lost her leg after being struck by an out-of-control school bus will return to court. Following the serious traffic accident, the woman was awarded $14 million in damages by a jury verdict. However, a Pennsylvania law regarding damages for pain and suffering reduced that award to $500,000.

The woman's attorneys say the law is unconstitutional, arguing that the woman should receive the full amount awarded by the jury.

Injured officer recovers from Pennsylvania accident

Several months after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while responding to a 911 call, a Pennsylvania police officer remains in rehabilitative care at a hospital. She has been forced to stay at the hospital in order to regain her ability to use her arms and hands, feed herself, walk and speak.

Police say the pedestrian accident that injured the officer occurred in December 2011 while she was providing backup for officers who were responding to a 911 call.

A 29-year-old Pennsylvania man was charged with careless driving following a car accident that left seven people injured. The driver reportedly triggered the three-vehicle accident when he swerved to avoid striking a car that had stopped in the middle of traffic.

Pennsylvania roads safer in 2011, according to PennDOT

According to a recent report issued by PennDOT, 2011 saw the second-lowest number of traffic fatalities on record with 1,291 people being killed in car accidents in Pennsylvania. This is 33 deaths lower than 2010's traffic fatality total.

While the reports signal good news for drivers in the state, officials say it is important to remember the Pennsylvania residents that did die on the road and busy streets are always hazardous.

Car accident leaves Vandergrift woman dead

A 26-year-old Pennsylvania woman is dead following a single-vehicle crash. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the accident occurred at around 1 a.m. when a car flew off the road and into a river. A lieutenant with the State Police said that the traffic accident happened near a sharp bend in the road. He explained that the driver "traveled off the right berm, across the guardrail and down over the embankment; then rolled into the river."

The vehicle's driver was reportedly able to escape from the vehicle, sustaining "crash-related" injuries in the process. An ambulance transported the 23-year-old woman a short distance before transferring her to a helicopter. From there, she was transported to a medical care facility to receive treatment. A representative with the Pennsylvania State Police said her injuries were minor. The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
